PaTRAM™ Private Instruction Course Directory
PaTRAM Institute™ introduces its newest service which provides the interested student an outlet to the finest instructors of sacred music, music theory and related subjects. Each course is designed to immerse the student in the subject matter in an online, interactive format and is presented by experienced instructors, all of whom are approved by PaTRAM Institute as experts in their field.
Each instructor’s email is displayed under the course description and their bio can be seen by clicking their name. The student simply contacts the instructor directly, and agrees with them on the cost, payment and instruction schedules.
Orthodox Music Appreciation
This class offers a brief overview of Orthodox music history, taught using musical examples from the various styles of singing from the Orthodox world. Students will learn about the history of Christian music; the role of singing in the Church; basic liturgics; Byzantine chant; Russian chant and polyphony; other major chant styles (Georgian, Serbian, etc.); and modern-day composers and styles. The course will also include information on how to find sheet music and recordings, including links to publishers and websites that offer downloadable music.

Liturgics
This course covers the liturgical cycle of the Orthodox Church year. Each class will included a discussion of the history of the services, the liturgical books needed to serve, rubrics, the order of the service, and important hymns from each service. By the end, students will understand the ranks of services, the daily and festal cycles of services, where to find rubrics and how to put together services for reading or singing, and the basics of church etiquette and proper order. The class will use the book Russian Church Singing, Vol. 1, by Johann von Gardner as a text.

Introduction to Musicianship I
Students will gain a solid foundation in sight reading and fundamental music theory by learning to identify and notate:
- Key signatures
- Melodic intervals
- Harmonic intervals
- Rhythmic motives
- Meters
In this course, specifically designed for immediate application in Orthodox sacred choral music, all examples and weekly assignments will be drawn from selections from the common English repertoire. At the end of the course students will have the opportunity to take the PaTRAM Level I Certification exam in Musicianship.

Introduction to Musicianship II
Through further instruction in sight-singing and notation, the lessons in Level II will build upon those skills learned in Level I. Students also learn the 8 Apolyitikia (Troparia) tones. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to take the PaTRAM Level II Certification exam in Musicianship.

8 Tones Online Class
Do you wish to learn the 8 tones by heart? Learn them here with expert guidance. Students will have exclusive access to a 5-module video instruction series presented by voice instructor and vocalist Talia-Maria Sheehan. Students will be guided through a process of analysis that will provide a system to identify, and reproduce, the Kievan 8 Tone melodies in stichera and troparia melody classes.

Private Voice Lessons
In a one-on-one online lesson students enjoy unparalleled attention to technical detail and artistic development. Students receive training in proper vocal technique and its application in a choral setting. This unique form of vocal training is designed to enable church singers to make the highest quality contribution to their choir. Emphasis is placed on diction, vocal color, breath support and endurance. The repertoire studied is chosen from a variety of liturgical singing styles, and students are given personal technical guidance appropriate to their vocal range.
