Teach Me Thy Statutes
PaTRAM Institute™ came to the forefront of the world stage by earning its first Grammy nomination in 2019 in the category of Best Choral Performance for the Teach Me Thy Statutes album. The CD also garnered MusicWeb International’s 2018 Recording of the Year award. Teach Me Thy Statutes features the work of famed Russian composer, Pavel Chesnokov and represents some of the Orthodox world’s greatest music. The PaTRAM Institute Male Choir, comprised of 42 Russian and American singers, with a massive bass section, collaborated to immerse the listener into the authentic Russian monastic style of singing. Grammy nominated Maestro Vladimir Gorbik, whose pedigree is from the Moscow Conservatory, skillfully united strong musicianship with superb diction to create the heavenly sound that epitomizes the very best cultural singing of the Russian Orthodox Church. Maestro Gorbik is the acclaimed choirmaster of the Holy Trinity – St. Sergius Lavra Representation Choir in Moscow, Russia. PaTRAM Institute co-founders Alexis and Katherine Lukianov served as Executive Producers. Teach Me Thy Statutes was the first release for PaTRAM Institute recorded and mastered by the multi-Grammy winner and nominee, Soundmirror and is distributed by the multi-Grammy winning recording label, Reference Recordings. The album was recorded in the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian Orthodox Church, at the Saratov Orthodox Theological Seminary.
Critical Reviews for Teach Me Thy Statutes
MusicWeb International, 2018 Recording of the Year:
“Really, this is a remarkable recording… Is there nothing this choir can’t do, no challenge to which they can’t rise? Intensely beautiful singing and sound; quite simply, choral albums don’t come much better than this.”
– Dan Morgan, MusicWeb International
AFanfare, October 2018:
“While there are any number of very fine discs of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music now on the market, this one sets an exemplary standard for the meticulous care taken in its production. The ensemble standards under the direction of PaTRAM™ co-founder Vladimir Gorbik are of the highest order, matching or exceeding those in all of the several dozen other discs of Orthodox church music in my personal collection. The choir excels in all the requisite qualities for this repertoire: solidity, depth, and richness of sound; tonal focus and projection; precision in ensemble unity and intonation; clarity of diction; and above all a deep identification with and expression of the liturgical texts.”
– James A. Altena, Fanfare
The Kansas City Star:
“Many thanks to Reference Recordings for bringing this unearthly beautiful music out of obscurity for the world to enjoy…you will really be blown away by the power and profundity of this impressive disc.”
– Patrick Neas, The Kansas City Star
