SUMMARY:Advanced Conducting Master Class in Chicago\, IL
DESCRIPTION:ALL CONDUCTOR POSITIONS HAVE BEEN FILLED. \nTHE APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 15th FOR CONDUCTOR/OBSERVER POSITONS!       See application requirements below. \n \nIn a uniquely designed format\, this Master Class will offer the experienced choir director a chance to work with a professional chamber choir and 3 hours of quality podium time under the guidance of Dr. Peter Jermihov– a dedicated master teacher and mentor. The class will culminate in a celebration of a full All-Night Vigil and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy officiated by Archbishop Peter of Chicago at the Pokrov Cathedral (ROCOR). Selected students will be given the opportunity to direct the choir at both Divine Services. The Master Class will open 8 seats for active conductors\, 4 women & 4 men\, who will receive intensive individual instruction\, and 20 seats for observer conductors\, who will receive full access to all 24 sessions and instruction in score analysis and preparation. Members of both categories of participants will be given a chance to audition for the choir (these auditions must take place before the dates of the Master Class). The class will be taught in English and Russian (as needed)\, and the repertoire will be sung in English and Church Slavonic. \nThe professionally-trained conductor\, in addition to acquiring manual conducting\, rehearsing\, and organizing skills\, must also excel at analyzing and preparing scores for performance. This aspect of a conductor’s training is often underemphasized or entirely omitted from the curriculum of study. What is the form of a piece of music\, how does the form breakdown into smaller phrases\, periods and sections\, what expressive markings does the composer employ\, what type of texture\, voice-leading and style are evident\, and what is the composer trying to accomplish?—are all questions a conductor must answer before he/she steps on the podium. After the analysis is done\, the score must be thoroughly marked and prepared for performance. There are various approaches to the discipline of analyzing and marking a conductor’s score\, and this Advanced Conducting Master Class offers the expertise and insights of Dr. Nicholas Reeves\, an accomplished Orthodox composer\, theorist\, and church musician. Dr. Reeves will work with both Active Conductors and Observers to help them understand analytical processes and develop effective and personalized habits of score preparation. SUMMARY:First Annual Master Class in Russia
DESCRIPTION:For the first time ever\, the Moscow Podvorie Choir of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra opened its doors to 35 participants\, both male and female signers from the USA\, Canada and Australia\, to join the renown Podvorie Choir in the singing of a Vigil and Divine Liturgy. \nThis trip offered the unprecedented opportunity for participants to work with Maestro Vladimir Gorbik and the Podvorie choir for a four-day workshop in Slavonic sacred choral music as guests of the Podvorie. \nParticipants enjoyed daily intensive workshop sessions and exclusive excursions to Sergiev Posad Lavra and top Moscow attractions\, such as the Kremlin and Christ the Savior Cathedral. The package included double occupancy accommodations\, all meals\, tuition and materials. \nRead more about the Master Class from the participants themselves\, including Isaac Crabtree and Andrew Gould. \n\nTestimonials\n“The goals\, as I understood them\, were to train a group of American musicians in the several pieces chosen\, so that we actually sounded not only like a professional choir\, but like a professional Russian Orthodox choir. I am in no position myself to judge this\, but Maestro Gorbik told us afterwards that the monastery was very pleased with us. Others of the faithful in attendance also expressed their great appreciation.” – Isaac Crabtree \n“As one of the participants\, I found the experience broadening and fascinating in several ways. It was a great joy to sing with such an excellent group of musicians\, and it was a surprise to see how readily this international group of voices blended. The guest singers were from the USA\, Canada\, and Australia. Most did not speak Russian\, and some had little to no experience singing in Slavonic. Thanks to excellent transliterated scores from Musica Russica and crystal-clear directing on the part of Maestro Gorbik\, it took little time for this group to blend perfectly with the professional singers who joined us from the Podvorye Male Choir and the Moscow Conservatory.” – Andrew Gould

SUMMARY:Interpreting Orthodox Sacred Choral Music – II
DESCRIPTION:A Transformative Learning Experience \nLike other liturgical arts\, the art of liturgical singing\, whether solo chant or choral\, is dependent to a great extent upon apprenticeship and following traditionally established models. The successful transmission and development of this subtle and ephemeral art depends on the availability of opportunities for aspiring liturgical musicians to encounter examples offered by skilled master teachers\, to observe and to learn from them in direct and personal ways. \nSuch an occasion was offered once again to the attendees of the Vladimir Gorbik Master Class entitled “Interpreting Orthodox Sacred Choral Music\,” which took place June 27-29\, 2013\, at St. Seraphim Orthodox Church in Santa Rosa\, California. During the intense two-and-a-half day period of preparation and worship\, five student conductors and nineteen singers participated in 2 two-hour conducting seminars and 5 three-hour choir rehearsals\, followed by a choral recital. The event culminated with the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Leave-taking of Pentecost and SS Peter and Paul (NS) on Friday evening and Saturday morning\, respectively\, alternately sung by the Master Class Chorus\, under the direction of Vladimir Gorbik and the student conductors\, and the parish choir of St. Seraphim Church\, under the direction of Nicholas Custer. Archbishop Benjamin of the OCA Diocese of the West\, who presided at the Divine Liturgy\, spoke warmly to the Master Class participants\, saying that he could not recall the last time he attended a service that was better sung. \nWhat exactly had the Master Class singers experienced in the preceding two days that enabled them to sing the divine services in such an extraordinary way? It was clear to everyone that some type of transformative process had taken place within a very short time\, combining motivation\, learning\, and personal growth on the part of each participant\, and bringing about a result that was greater than the sum of its parts. Some of the singers were experienced vocalists with conservatory-level training\, while others were rank-and-file church choir singers; some of the repertoire was extremely challenging\, such as Rachmaninoff’s Cherubic Hymn and “We Hymn Thee” (from his Liturgy opus 31)\, while other portions were quite simple\, consisting of Kievan Chant litanies and responses; some of the hymn settings—by Nicholas Reeves\, Benedict Sheehan\, and Nazo Zakkak—were brand new compositions\, while other settings were centuries-old znamenny chants. Some student conductors were seasoned professionals\, while others were beginners\, standing in front of a large choir for the first or second time in their lives. \nThe unifying factor at the Master Class that harmoniously brought all these elements together was Vladimir Gorbik’s inspired teaching and model of leadership\, which instilled in everyone a focused seriousness of purpose\, a great reverence for the sacred words well joined to beautiful melody and harmony\, and the necessity to dedicate one’s entire self–heart\, mind\, and body–to the task at hand. Nothing was allowed to be sung in a matter-of-fact\, perfunctory\, or careless manner\, without due attention to ensemble\, intonation\, and nuance. As one participant noted\, it seemed that Maestro Gorbik’s most frequently used word was “More!” More sound! More nuance! More strength! More beauty! More energy! More mystery! At the same time\, every external interpretive device or musical technique was related\, in vivid and memorable real-life analogies\, to a spiritual dimension of the church singer’s and conductor’s ministry. \n\nTestimonials\n“The Vladimir Gorbik Master Class was a very insightful and exceptional experience\, I was offered the opportunity to augment my current conducting abilities as well as gain a sincere understanding of how to interpret and conduct the music of the Orthodox Church…. This Master Class was not only a unique musical opportunity; it was also a spiritual journey I will always treasure.”” – A professional conductor and college faculty member \n“Vladimir Gorbik so effectively communicated the height\, depth and spirituality of our worship through his holistic understanding of mystery and music: where Earth and Heaven meet. I have been changed by Vladimir’s heart he so freely shared… On the Sunday following the Class\, my overall conducting had a new life\, a fresh spiritual pause and a more solid connection to the text and the liturgical context.” – A church choir director who sang in the choir \n“I would recommend the workshops to those who have very little experience with Orthodox church music\, as well as to those who are active singers and directors in the Orthodox church. I would welcome the opportunity to sing with Vladimir Gorbik on one of his future visits.” – A non-Orthodox choral musician \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n The beautiful temple of St. Seraphim Orthodox Church\n \n \n \n \n \n Host\, Fr. This event marked the first time that singers from each of these institutions have collaborated musically\, but as St. Tikhon’s Choir director Benedict Sheehan remarked\, “We hope that the success of this event will mark a new era of cooperation between the music departments of all three seminaries.” \nThe choir was led by renowned music instructor and choir director Vladimir Gorbik who in his closing remarks thanked everyone for their participation in the Masters Class and for all the hard work put forth by the participants. In the days leading up to the concert\, the students participated in a grueling rehearsal schedule\, meeting three times daily\, as well as singing for the Vigil and Liturgy Services at the monastery church. \nClosing remarks were offered by the Rector of St. Tikhon’s Seminary\, Bishop Michael of New York and New Jersey. In praising the choir under the direction of Maestro Gorbik\, His Grace said how incredible it was for 25 individual male voices\, in 4 separate parts\, to join “in harmony” to produce such a masterpiece of a concert. He added that it reminds us how together these three distinct seminaries can work together “in harmony” to promote Orthodox theological education in our country and to spiritually form the future leaders of our Holy Church. \nThe live recording of this concert was released in 2013 by St. Tikhon’s Press.
